Education Commission & Aga Khan Foundation - The Innovative Pedagogies Project - Kenya Country Brief

April 2023

The Innovative Pedagogies Project (IPP) – spearheaded by Education Commission and funded by the Lego Foundation – serves as a response to the Save Our Future campaign, championing the call to make education inclusive, engaging, and adaptive in Kenya.

Led by the Education Commission, in partnership with the Aga Khan Foundation and Samuel Hall, and funded by the Lego Foundation, the Innovative Pedagogies Project (IPP) seeks to follow up on the adoption of IEA pedagogies after the resumption of schooling, to strengthen the Kenyan education system. This project aims to assess IEA pedagogy implementation in Kenya, identify gaps hindering successful classroom adaptation, and provide policy recommendations for improving teacher competencies and supporting learners to flourish.

Samuel Hall conducted a Rapid Research (observations and interviews) at system, school, and classroom levels, and Policy Dialogues with stakeholders. The Policy Dialogues discussed the Rapid Research findings to inform policy recommendations.

The research findings suggested that Kenya intends to provide inclusive, engaging, and adaptive learning for all children with the CBC. However, full implementation of IEA pedagogies requires addressing structural challenges, which were discussed during Policy Dialogues by key educational actors who devised a national action plan.

To facilitate the implementation of IEA pedagogies in Kenya, there should be sustained teacher professional development, adequate resources for classroom adaptation, purposeful data collection, coordination among stakeholders, and clear policy frameworks for alignment with IEA pedagogy principles.
