Daniel Provost
Research Assistant

Daniel joined Samuel Hall as a Research Assistant (intern) in January of 2023. Previously, he completed a Master's in International Affairs at the Geneva Graduate Institute (IHEID), during which time he researched and wrote an MA dissertation focused on the manner in which perceptual dynamics factor into the repatriation of children of French and British 'Foreign Terrorist Fighters' currently detained in Al Hol and Al Roj internment camps, Northeastern Syria.

In 2021, Daniel also carried out an internship with the NGO Geneva Call. In this context, he participated in a research project entitled From Words to Deeds, undertaken in tandem with the Geneva Academy for International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights. This project sought to establish parallels between, on the one hand, Armed-Non-State-Actor discourse, policy and practice and, on the other, eleven core norms drawn from IHL and IHRL. Lessons learned ultimately factored into protection efforts built around dialogue with ANSAs, and aimed at generating respect for certain international legal norms in order to mitigate harms suffered by civilian populations in situations of armed conflict. Research topics of interest to / addressed by Daniel in the past include: ANSA practice, including with regards to the recruitment and use of children, CAAFAGs / child soldiering and reintegration of child soldiers, counterterrorism (and in particular the intersection of counterterrorism and child protection, the treatment of children with links to groups categorised as 'terrorist').

Daniel also holds a BA in History from the University of British Columbia (Vancouver).
