Climate Change as Lived Experience: Women’s Health, Bodies and Displacement – 2026 Annual Lecture outcomes

On 2 July 2026, more than 100 researchers, practitioners, refugee leaders, community representatives and policymakers gathered at Aga Khan University in Nairobi for the third Annual Lecture, hosted by the Aga Khan University Graduate School of Media and Communications, the Institute for the Study of Muslim Civilisations and Samuel Hall, in partnership with the LLEARN project.

Keynote speaker Dr Yasir Shafiq, field reflector Sudi Noor, and panellists Professor Amina Abubakar, Dr Vibian Angwenyi and Caroline Muthoni examined how climate change, conflict and displacement compound to shape women's health and bodies, and what would need to change in data, financing and policy to respond.

The discussion pointed to four practical shifts for researchers, funders, governments and humanitarian actors: make health and risk data visible and usable; protect continuity of maternal, reproductive and primary healthcare; move finance and decision-making closer to communities; and integrate displacement into local climate and health planning.
